John Lehr, M.D., discovered his passion for medicine early, inspired by afternoons spent at his father’s cardiology practice, where he saw the profound trust patients placed in his dad. After studying at Vassar College and completing medical research at the University of Miami, he attended the Miller School of Medicine, focusing on immunology and its link to ophthalmology. During his residency at New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, he found his calling in retina care under the mentorship of Dr. Joseph Walsh. His fascination with the retina as a “sacred site” where diseases reveal themselves shaped his career path.
Dr. Lehr joined Magruder Eye Institute after fellowship training as a retina specialist, drawn by its advanced care and family-like culture. Today, he treats complex retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration using state-of-the-art diagnostic and laser techniques. Known for his empathetic care, Dr. Lehr values building relationships with his patients, striving to give them a second chance at vision. For him, Magruder is not just a workplace but home, where he feels privileged to make a lasting impact on his patients’ lives.
